The following are some of the frequently asked questions on how to use the Receipt Filer Gold software. If you have only Receipt Filer Lite software installed, please review the help page for Receipt Filer Lite.

How do I upgrade to Receipt Filer Gold from Receipt Filer Lite?

Before installing Receipt Filer Gold, please first upgrade your Receipt Filer Lite to the latest version available (v4.3.0). 
Otherwise Receipt Filer Gold will not be able to import from Receipt Filer Lite.

After installing Receipt Filer Gold and entering the Gold, you will be prompted whether you want to import from "Receipt Filer Lite" (assuming Receipt Filer Lite is detected on your android).   If you choose not to import data at this time, you will be prompted again the next time you enter Receipt Filer Gold.

If you are sure you will NEVER want to import data from "Receipt Filer Lite", and you will NEVER need that data again, then you can do following:
  • You can choose "import data"  on entering Receipt Filer Gold
  • Main Menu->"Delete All" will delete all pictures from Receipt Filer Lite, as well as the associated data in Receipt Filer Gold
  • This is the nuclear option, please use it carefully because your data/photo is not recoverable!!!

How do I delete all picture and data in Receipt Filer Gold?

Main Menu->"Delete All" option not only delete all picture and data from Receipt Filer Gold, it also delete all pictures taken with Receipt Filer Lite. 

Use this option carefully because these photo is not recoverable (unless you already exported them to .zip file)

How do I transfer exported data from my phone to my computer?

To export both data and pictures:
  • Clicking Main Menu->"Export Receipts"->"Export Data and Images to SDCard" .
  • Connect USB Cable to your computer
  • Select "Mount" on Android Phone.
  • On your computer, navigate to the newly mounted drive, and find receipt_filer_export.zip
You can export csv through email by the following steps:
  • Clicking Main Menu->"Export Receipts"->"Export Data to SDCard" .
  • Connect USB Cable to your computer
  • Select "Mount" on Android Phone.
  • On your computer, navigate to the newly mounted drive, and find receipt_filer_export.csv

How do I downgrade to Receipt Filer Lite from Receipt Filer Gold?

Why would you want to do that?   Oh well, if you really really want to do it.
  • Uninstall your Receipt Filer Gold: Android Home screen -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> "Receipt Filer Gold"
  • If you have not previously installed Receipt Filer Lite or have uninstalled it:
    • Install Receipt Filer Lite from Market. Follow instructions in installation page
Since you may have been doing a lot of power tool stuff in Receipt Filer Gold, including "Delete All", you may have already lost some of the data from Receipt Filer Lite.   So downgrade at your own risk.

How do I add category in Receipt Filer Gold? 

You can either type in category text field of "Add/Edit Receipt" page, or click "Change" Button next to it.   "Change" button will bring up
a dialog box offering choices of various pre-existing categories, at the bottom of which has a middle button "Add New Category".

If something goes wrong, how can I recover data?

You can always export your data to computer from time to time.

How do I add a refund?

You need to create a new receipt with "-40.00" which means refund of $40.00.  You can add a picture to it too.

How do I select an existing store or enter a new store name?

When you are entering receipt detail, you can see a text box and an arrow button for the "Business:" field.
  • To select an existing business, click on the arrow button on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • To enter a new business name:
    • click on the text field
    • slide out the keyboard
    • type in the new business name.

How do I select an existing category or create a new category?

When you are entering receipt detail, you can see a text box and an arrow button for the "Category:" field.
  • To select an existing category, click on the arrow button on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • To create a new category and use it:
    • click on the text field
    • slide out the keyboard
    • type in the new category name.
    • save the entire receipt

How do I capture an image of the receipt?

You can capture the image of the receipt either when you are adding a new receipt or viewing an existing receipt:
  • In the screen "Enter Receipt Detail" screen, there is a button called "Take Picture". Click on it.
  • You will see a preview screen of what the camera sees. On the lower right of the screen there is a button called "Take Picture"
  • Steadily point the camera towards the receipt.
  • Click on the button "Take Picture" on the lower right of the screen.
  • Make sure your hand is steady. The camera will auto-focus on the receipt and take a picture.
  • After the picture is taken, the camera preview is closed and the new picture will show up in the "Enter Receipt Detail" screen.

How do I capture the image of the receipt in portrait mode?

There's a button called "rotate clockwise" underneath the photo you took.  It will save your image in whatever orientation you prefer.

In addition, the software detects the orientation of the phone through its accelerometer, and orients the picture based on how you hold the phone. When you are in the camera preview screen, hold the phone either up-right or side-ways will determine the orientation of the picture. To use portrait mode, hold the phone upright before clicking the "Take Picture" button.

Why is the screen black after I clicked "Take Picture" button in "Enter Receipt Detail" screen?

After you click "Take Picture" button in "Enter Receipt Detail" screen, the screen should show a preview of camera image. If the screen turns black, most likely your hand blocked the camera. Turn the phone around and check out where is the camera, and make sure your hand doesn't cover it when taking a picture.

How do I delete a receipt?

You can delete an existing receipt with the following steps:
  • Go to the main screen
  • Click on "List Receipts by Date" to see the list of receipts.
  • Click on the receipt you want to delete. This will show you the screen "Enter Receipt Detail".
  • Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
  • Click on the Delete button. If you don't see Delete button, you must be using an older version of the software. Follow the installation instruction to upgrade Receipt Filer.
  • Read the warning carefully, and confirm if you want to delete the receipt or not.

Why does your application need internet access?

We need internet access to check the most updated versions on our servers.   Also when you export your receipts via email.

For security reasons, you should NOT scan in receipts that contain your full credit card numbers and other sensitive information.  

Why can't I use feature X?

If you read that Receipt Filer supports a particular feature, and you can't find the feature in your installation, you likely are using an older version of Receipt Filer. See description of feature improvement of different versions. If you like to upgrade, please follow the installation instruction to upgrade Receipt Filer.

How can I leave comments and suggestions?

The best way is to leave some comments in the Android Market (TM). You can follow the installation instruction to find the Receipt Filer applications in the market. Click on the entry. You can give rating and comments for the application after you downloaded it.
