The following are some of the frequently asked questions on how to use the Receipt Filer software.

When I emailed my receipt, the "Amount" field on the email is off by 1 decimal point?

You are right,  a programming error prior to version 3.0.2 caused the "Amount" field to be off.   Our bad, we are truly sorry.  3.0.2 version fixed this bug.

How do I add a refund?

You need to create a new receipt with "-40.00" which means refund of $40.00.  You can add a picture to it too.

How do I select an existing store or enter a new store name?

When you are entering receipt detail, you can see a text box and an arrow button for the "Business:" field.
  • To select an existing business, click on the arrow button on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • To enter a new business name:
    • click on the text field
    • slide out the keyboard
    • type in the new business name.

How do I select an existing category or create a new category?

When you are entering receipt detail, you can see a text box and an arrow button for the "Category:" field.
  • To select an existing category, click on the arrow button on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • To create a new category and use it:
    • click on the text field
    • slide out the keyboard
    • type in the new category name.
    • save the entire receipt

How do I capture an image of the receipt?

You can capture the image of the receipt either when you are adding a new receipt or viewing an existing receipt:
  • In the screen "Enter Receipt Detail" screen, there is a button called "Take Picture". Click on it.
  • You will see a preview screen of what the camera sees. On the lower right of the screen there is a button called "Take Picture"
  • Steadily point the camera towards the receipt.
  • Click on the button "Take Picture" on the lower right of the screen.
  • Make sure your hand is steady. The camera will auto-focus on the receipt and take a picture.
  • After the picture is taken, the camera preview is closed and the new picture will show up in the "Enter Receipt Detail" screen.

How do I capture the image of the receipt in portrait mode?

For version 4.0.0 and later, there's a button called "rotate clockwise" underneath the photo you took.    It will save your image in whatever orientation you prefer.

In addition, the software detects the orientation of the phone through its accelerometer, and orients the picture based on how you hold the phone. When you are in the camera preview screen, hold the phone either up-right or side-ways will determine the orientation of the picture. To use portrait mode, hold the phone upright before clicking the "Take Picture" button.

Why is the screen black after I clicked "Take Picture" button in "Enter Receipt Detail" screen?

After you click "Take Picture" button in "Enter Receipt Detail" screen, the screen should show a preview of camera image. If the screen turns black, most likely your hand blocked the camera. Turn the phone around and check out where is the camera, and make sure your hand doesn't cover it when taking a picture.

How do I delete a receipt?

You can delete an existing receipt with the following steps:
  • Go to the main screen
  • Click on "List Receipts by Date" to see the list of receipts.
  • Click on the receipt you want to delete. This will show you the screen "Enter Receipt Detail".
  • Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
  • Click on the Delete button. If you don't see Delete button, you must be using an older version of the software. Follow the installation instruction to upgrade Receipt Filer.
  • Read the warning carefully, and confirm if you want to delete the receipt or not.

Why does your application need internet access?

We need internet access to check the most updated versions on our servers.   Also when you export your receipts via email.

For security reasons,  you NOT scan in receipts that contain your full credit card numbers and other sensitive information.  


Why can't I use feature X?

If you read that Receipt Filer supports a particular feature, and you can't find the feature in your installation, you likely are using an older version of Receipt Filer. See description of feature improvement of different versions. If you like to upgrade, please follow the installation instruction to upgrade Receipt Filer.

How can I leave comments and suggestions?

The best way is to leave some comments in the Android Market (TM). You can follow the installation instruction to find the Receipt Filer application in the market. Click on the entry. You can give rating and comments for the application after you downloaded it.
